Avant-garde and old
How far can drop a house in a historic setting in the familiar context? For a reflection and an Underfur to a new building.
A piece of alienation
Since led me almost four weeks after the Fall of the Underfur architect Helmet Schubert by Intergovernmental, I have her a very sentimental relationship. The narrowly saved from Verfallstod streets is my Symbolort to rescue and revive east German town centers. Our own sentimentality, it suggests, even before the sentiment of other people to have respect. And to ask whether it is wise that the house rose to the old feelings of many Erfurt apparently injured. A question that concerns not only timber-framed streets, but the principles of the relationship between architects and laymen as: How much provocation can and should be when it comes to realizing their own ideas? And as much consideration to his ideas into use that are absolutely do not own?
That the house provoked, says Joachim Deckert almost with pleasure: “As ever we threaten people with his fists and yell., Shame on you what, ‘and as an old mother is outraged over the house, her daughter said,’ I think , that is art. And I know nothing. “” You do not understand why this beautiful but strange metal decor, the ground floor facade shapes, why we see no door, but at the bell, why the fronts are flush-smooth, the windows in bands rather than narrow, individually and what a rectangular terrace floor is red instead of a pitched roof with dormers and bay windows. “Yes, polarized it already,” says Rainer Mester.
But after he felt not very strong. “It’s a normal house in a normal town situation.” At least in the relatively abstract point of view of experts: scale, height, number of floors, use. But lay people look for familiar images, the facade patterns and silhouettes, according to the conventional ornamentation. It irritates and discourages walkers from their timber to salvation. This again is in expert environment tolerable, if not necessary. Here, every era has left its mark. Why not ours? “Asks Mester. Especially as the contemporary punctuation is not an end in itself but largely of the interior and its residential use explain. But how far can “form follows function” are in the Pergamentergasse? It belongs to most of Erfurt to the refuge of the now non-functional, the small-small-particle, the crooked and wasteful, especially to the refuge of spatial stability in a world where everything else is always unstable. “Why not here?” Asks Rainer Mester. “. It should not be holding anything, as we know it” The count for thought. “I would not look at it as a provocation, but as a riddle” It makes people more receptive to high quality unconventional. But I’m afraid that is not possible in an environment with such fixed seer maintenance. There is no thought process in motion, but rather paralyzed with indignation. The house does not educate laymen to a professional aesthetic understanding, but it does something more than old towns also problematic: It creates another piece of estrangement between architects and ordinary citizens.

Revitalize, not mere collection of exhibits
It speaks for the successful revival of the 245-acre town of Erfurt, that there are no tourist-catering single structure. The district is also a popular residential address where the few remaining vacant lots are very expensive. But not everyone who wants to get into the labyrinthine medieval old town, dreams of the Stubengemütlichkeit a timber-framed house. Even if its picturesque happy, familiar cut the eye – it corresponds to contemporary living needs with its dark, small rooms are long gone. that is, modern living standards have a characteristic medieval old town is no place?
The architect Joachim Mester Deckert and Rainer have shown the house to the Rose in the Pergamentergasse 2, that sophisticated, modern residential architecture in a narrow lane in the 11th Century fit. It is a new building, which is otherwise not camouflaged as many of his neighbors as the old building. Mester, and Deckert, while building owners and occupants of the house to admit: “. We wanted to oppose the conventional habits of seeing something” Even for the house with the Thuringian Architecture Prize 2009 was awarded. There is no apparent entrance, flush plaster facade is crossed by two horizontal bands of windows of different heights, and the slightly recessed base disappears behind a curtain with golden shimmering aluminum cut-out for Rose motif. The fact that yawn on both sides currently untapped, leaves the house as a solitary act and strengthened its creative extravagance. But lack of respect for its environment can not accuse the building. He traces the outline of 1986 demolished predecessor from the Middle Ages and refers to the eaves height of the neighbors. The horizontal articulated façade that rises in the precincts of the streets throughout unkapriziös with, especially the difficult situation in a narrow, shady lane bill: Because the building can only be supplied by the road side with natural light, the front as much window area had wrung as possible be.
Because the appearance of any new building is due provocation egocentric, but its inner structure and a masterful daylight economy. For example, in shaded ground floor, which contains guest rooms, technology area and the ground-level garage, to dispense entirely with windows. On the first floor the bedrooms are running with a narrow band of windows at breast height. The second floor offers a spacious dining and living area space and fits with its clear height of three meters and forget an unobstructed windows for abundant natural light the cramped old town location. The top floor is divided into a back alley to the terrace and placed small retreats, and the staircase is illuminated by a light dome. Of course, these qualities remain the passer hidden. He sees only the outer shell, which has become unusual in its appearance to a building block of all sides invoked intricacy and diversity. The intact urban context has still to any educational extravaganza with moderation. In other words, the character of Erfurt’s old does not suffer when gaps are filled with buildings that are the architectures of the 21 Century, make known. Revitalization is finally not a traditional museum.
